I am not sure if she is earning money or not, but she is running a community with more than 7000 members, for sure she will be able to monetize something.

We do see that her community gives a percentage to charity, so there must be some earnings involved.

We are talking about Sylvie D from La Rochelle France. For sure you already saw pictures about La Rochelle: when you watched the movie Das Boot: the picture below was taken in La Pallice, the most important harbour of La Rochelle.

Go and wish Sylvie D blog a happy first year birthday and add to that some Linky Love :-)

Happy Birthday Sylvie

You all know by now that one stay at home job everybody talking about is becoming a professional blogger. So you might ask yourself:: why doesn’t this site by example shows lots of ads?

1 reason is when you show ads, you could end up to the mercy of your advertising service, like what is happening at What happens when Adsense TM doesn’t love you : follow up

Another reason is that I want advertisers to have a high ROI: meaning that I prefer to attract a lot of visitors first before showing lots of ads.

You could argue that I am loosing money like this, which is true, but as long as the loss is a few cents a day, I might as well use other ways of monetizing my blog in the mean time.

As usual: don’t put all your eggs in one basket!

Have a look at this problogger website called Linky Love that makes money out of advertisements. Sounds as if the people at Linky Love really do what they like and are their own boss…

But are they?

Not really when you read their What happens when Adsense TM doesn’t love you : follow up post. It’s quite simple: if you advertise for them, you have to make sure you follow their rules. And as the case study shows: it isn’t easy to apply the rules, nor do they explain the rules in detail.

And doesn’t that feel like a boss who one day loves you and the next day hates you, doesn’t give you a raise or fires you without any explanation at all?

So it is not that simple to say; I am working from home therefore I do what I want.

If I really wanted to do what I wanted, I would now sit by the pool in the shade, sipping a fresh fruit juice and reading a book…

john chowExcept for really battling it out with Google in the open like John Chow did (and he lost the battle but he reached his goal first : become famous before getting kicked out… talking about  SEO techniques.

But we all agree that every search engine doesn’t like the following techniques:

6 DO NOT DO SEO TECHNIQUES

  • Do not write in white font (or the same font as your background, kind of invisible ink)… it used to be a trick to put keywords in white so nobody except the spiders could read them. These pages ranked high in the past and after getting bitten by a venomous spider are penalized or banned.
  • Do not list keywords in your content: the spider is expecting readable text (yes, we are in the age of spell checkers and grammar checkers), so the search engine gets alarmed when he reads lists like keyword1, keyword2, keyword3….
  • Do not use 2 times a title tag: only 1 title for 1 page.
  • Do not copy-paste entire pages: spiders hate duplicate content just like most people hate it when TV keeps on repeating the same show over and over again.
  • Do not use keywords in your keyword tag that never show up in your content. If you say your keyword is SEO but your content is about apples and pears… again spider not happy…
  • Do not use frames: spiders just don’t like it, although there is no penalty there. It’s just that spiders have a preference for "no frames". If your date likes coffee, you don’t bring her to a cocktail-bar do you?
