Your time budget:

no time:

use "very easy to rank number 1 for" web pages.
Mostly these are web-pages not a lot of people are looking for, so no SEO person was interested in it in the first place.
But: they are the hidden gems that you discovered: a lot of people looking for it and not many web-pages, the so called niche websites!

a little time:

use "easy to rank number 1 for" web pages
use SEO software like SEO Elite

2 hours a day:

do it yourself SEO: use all the SEO techniques you can find on the Internet and try out all the SEO software you are able to try out. Work like a dog to earn money quick….
what do you want and what can you afford (effort)
to get what you want?

As with all businesses, online businesses are no different: You need to set your goal and you need to allocate resources to reach that goal.

Now you say: what does this have to do with SEO? I "just" want to rank number 1 in the search engine, don’t I?

That’s true, but then you need to ask yourself: do you want to rank high for "shoes" or do you want to rank high for "Italian shoes made from genuine cows eating real grass"? The latter is quite easy, the first quite impossible.

And: do you want to rank high next month or next year?

And: do you want to spend any money for ranking high on the search engines? If yes, how much do you want to invest? If not, how much time and work do you want to invest? Do you want to work like a dog in order to rank high?

So for now ask yourself how easy or how difficult you want to make your SEO efforts for yourself and for your budget.

In the first part of our SEO time and budget post, we asked you what amount of time versus money you want to invest in order to rank high in the search engine.

Then you also need to know: if you want to be number 1 in the Olympic games, you start from young and there is a whole team around you to help you performing well. In other words:

resources: start from a young age and have a hole team of professionals around you

For ranking number 1 on the search engine:

how much time do you want to spend yourself
how much money do you want to spend to buy:

And you need to know: money can buy time: if you only want to spend 30 minutes a week on SEO, then it pays off to buy a SEO software like SEO Elite and let the money spend speed up your lack of time.

Make sure that you only use those keyword phrases that appear in your webpage, title tag, and meta description tag. Keywords that are only found in your keywords tag, most likely will be ignored. Or worse, you will be punished.

Search engines are still machine made and do make a difference between singular and plural. The idea is that one day search engines will be as smart as humans and understand that somebody looking for apple tree, most likely also is interested in apple trees.

What about spelling errors?

If you know of a common misspelling of a popular keyword that could be used to find your site you could enter it in your keywords meta tag.

Yet, search engines start to use spell checkers themselves, so they could start penalizing you for not knowing the spelling of the keywords you are optimizing for.

In other words: try your luck and see what happens. personally I don’t use spelling errors to optimize my page, but still a lot of people do and do get extra visitors.

Don’t spam keywords

Don’t repeat 1 keyword more than 5 times: e.g. apple, apple tree, apple trees, apple blossom, apple compote…

1 more apple and the search engine will start wondering whether you are spamming… which you are most likely not, as it sounds perfectly normal in the list above. Yet again: search engines are not yet as smart as humans, so they just count the apples and when to many apples, they will call it spam.

So keep in mind to count your keywords for repeats.

If your site has content of interest to a specific geographic location be sure to include the actual location in your keyword meta. A page about Japanese apple trees could use the word Japan in its keywords.

Make sure you write a text that is human readable. In other words: text that you would use in a normal conversation. This description is what people are going to read in the search engines and should invite them to visit your site!

SEO tips to write a good description

Make sure to include your most important keyword phrases in your description.

This should go without saying, because your whole page should be about your keywords: especially the keywords used in your title. (Although dmoz.org doesn’t want you to put your title in your description, and dmoz.org is supposed to be the biggest directory standard ever. In other words: what you do god for one, will be not good for another, same when it comes to search engines and directories.)

Try to have your most important keywords appear at the beginning of your description. If you are using 250 characters for your description, you will see that Google will cut of the end part, so people only can read the first words of your description!

Don’t work in front of the TV when you have a stay at home job

This is something I used to do: take my laptop on my lap (how convenient), and join my family watching TV. Sounds great but there were 2 downfalls:

although sitting in the same room, my family complained I wasn’t interacting with them
although having the laptop on,TV and family is way too distracting to do decent work

Yes, I did get some things done, but really: the efficiency was not there: what could be done in half an hour during the day, would take the rest of the evening when with family and TV.

So just reserve to yourself a time-slot for work and a time-slot for fun and family!

If you want to make money blogging, you need to know the first thing about a blog: it’s a diary… Which means you need to update it, preferably daily.

Otherwise you need to make a static website: make once, let it sit forever

How many times do you update your blog?

Blogging is all about updating. Regular updates will have your regular visitors come back at regular times. As simple as that.

How frequently do you need to update a blog?

For starters you should be posting at least 3 times a week, which means 10 or more posts a month.

By doing so you not only create more content but search engines do love pages that change constantly. Like a bear is attracted to honey, search engines are attracted to changing content! Shhhh, the secret is out

There are some rules of thumb when it comes to writing metatags. And of course you need your HTML right.

The correct placement for meta tags is between the and tags of your webpage. Modern day spiders love to read human readable text, so put your description before your keywords.

The correct length of your meta tags should be :

keywords meta tag: less than 14 words
description meta tag: less than 250 characters including spaces
your website title should be between 50-80 characters long.

Meta tags are not there to fool the search engines.

Unfortunately in the early days of search engines, people have been misusing especially the keywords meta tag in order to fool the search engines. How?

Suppose I have a webpage about apples.
I know lots if you know that lots of people are looking for sex.

So in order to fool the search engine, I add the word sex inside my keyword tags. Why?

Because all these people looking for sex will click on my site!

What is the consequence when you fool the search engines?

1. You get angry visitors

People looking for sex come to your apple site. They don’t find what they were looking for and they become pretty mad:

mad about your site not living up of your promise inside your keyword tag
mad about the search engine giving completely wrong search results

So they will in future use another search engine that matches more accurate the search results to what they are looking for.

2. You get angry search engines!

And angry search engines only have one weapon: they will kick you out!

Sooner or later the slow spider is going to read your whole page and come to the conclusion that things don’t add up either:

your keyword doesn’t match your real content.

Just be informed: mad spiders bite with a lot of poison…

They will push you down in the ranking or kick you out completely of the search engine rankings.

What can fashion teach you about ranking high in the search engines

Buttons, wire, needle and cloth are part of a stupid short or of a haute couture dress. The end result all depends on how you combine all the factors

Same when it comes to metatags: they are only a fraction of the factors that determine whether your page will rank high or not.

Meta tags are not there to be the one and only reason to rank number 1 in the search engine:

meta tags are part of ranking number 1 in a search engine, like
buttons, wire, needles and cloth are part of a haute couture dress.

Search engines look at a combination of a lot of factors to determine your listing. Metatags are an important part, nothing more and nothing less.
